Red Flags to Watch For When Buying a Car to Flip

Red Flag #1: Salvage or Rebuilt Title

A salvage title means the car was declared a total loss by an insurance company. Rebuilt means it was repaired and re-inspected. These cars sell for 20–40% less than clean title cars — and for good reason. Financing is nearly impossible for buyers, which limits your buyer pool.

Red Flag #2: Paint Mismatch

Stand at the rear corner of the car and look down the length. Different panels should match exactly. Mismatched paint = prior accident repairs = possible hidden frame damage.

Red Flag #3: Rust

Surface rust is cosmetic. Rust on the frame, subframe, or floorboards is structural and potentially dangerous. Look under the car before you buy.

Red Flag #4: Flood Damage

Signs include: musty smell, water stains on carpet or headliner, rust under the dash or in the trunk, sand or silt in the door jambs, corroded wiring.

Red Flag #5: VIN Doesn't Match

Always check the VIN on the dash, door jamb, and title. Mismatches can indicate theft or title fraud.

Red Flag #6: Seller Pressure Tactics

"I have three other people coming to look at it today" is often a lie. Never let urgency override your inspection process. Rushed deals are how flippers get burned.

Red Flag #7: No Service Records

For high-mileage cars, no service records means no way to verify maintenance. Budget for the worst.
